What we can’t learn from a piece of writing.

When we see the written work of a child we can analyse it in great detail, looking at the letter size, shape, spacing. We can pick out punctuation errors, parts of speech used or missed. we can look at the level of language used, paragraphing, students voice in the writing, flow and progression.

It’s what we can’t see on the page that can be just as telling. How does the child hold their pen/pencil when writing, how to they sit. Are they fidgeting throughout. Do they rest their head on their arm when writing. Are they squinting or blinking lots, tilting their head to the side.

So as a teacher ensure you are observing the child during the task and not just the outcome, as this is a tell tail sign of underlying issues, stress and lack of understanding of the task. After this crucial information has been observed, then analyse the actual outcome as you may discover more with a complete picture to go from.

I hope this is helpful? Send me an email if you have any questions…
